Parent Leadership Training Institute's 2014 Graduation

There were several Macdonough parents who graduated from PLTI today, a 20 week course which helps parents become leading advocates for children designed by the American Leadership Forum, Leadership Greater Hartford, and the Connecticut Commission on Children. This is a huge accomplishment! Congratulations to all the graduates. Additionally, a huge congratulations to Nikki Belton for receiving the Lillie Mae Fitzpatrick Alumni Award for all of her work recruiting and supporting so many parents through the program.

Kindergarten visits the Farm

The kindergarten classes visit Sycamore Farm in Higganum.  They got to see sheep, horses, pigs, piglets, cows, goats and chicken.  They even got to watch a horse riding show.  Thank you to Sycamore Farm!

The kindergarten students were treated to a visit from a local author and parent of Sadie and Eva, Mr. Jeff Cohen.  He read us his first book Eva and Sadie and the Worst Haircut Ever!
What a special treat.

Ice Cream Social

Thanks to the 2nd grade Parents for hosting our annual Spring Ice Cream Social. Students, parents and teachers enjoyed ice cream sundaes with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

Torch Run

Today our very own Unified Sports team joined the Law Enforcement’s Special Olympics Torch Run. Despite the rain, runners ran up Pease Avenue with support of the Macdonough cheering squad!

Saying Goodbye to Our Buddies

Last Friday, fifth graders took their final field trip to see their Equal This buddies from Jack Jackter Intermediate School in Colchester. All year long, students have been writing each other letters and getting together for field trips that focused on various mathematical practices. On Friday, students went to the New Britain Art Museum. Students first constructed geometric cubes out of folded pieces of paper (no tape!), then students took a tour of the art museum. We had a great time.



Macdonough Students To Take Connecticut River Trip!

 

The Jonah Center for Earth and Art invites the public to take part in a creative canoe and kayak paddle on the Connecticut River on Saturday, June 28, launching from the boathouse ramp at Harbor Park at 1 p.m. The event will include creation of a living art work: all the boaters will raft up their boats in a rosette near the southern tip of Wilcox Island, just north of the Arrigoni Bridge. The boats will then float slowly in formation under the bridge, where photographers will be posted to capture the art work in still shots and video from above. The group will then paddle upstream around Wilcox Island before re-gathering at the southern tip. From there, the boats will return in close formation to the launch area, this time being photographed from Harbor Park. The still and moving images will promote protection of local waterways and the creative possibilities of Middletown’s riverfront.

As in recent years, the paddle will include as many as 16 Macdonough School 4^th-graders, most of them experiencing for the first time close-up the spectacular waterway that borders their neighborhood. The Macdonough School PTA, the North End Action Team (NEAT), and financial donors collaborate with the Jonah Center to support the involvement of these children.

Connecticut River Museum Visits Fourth Grade.

This week fourth grade had a visit from the Connecticut River Museum.  They participated in 2 programs, River Dwellers and Connecticut River in a Jar.  Students learned about the different people that lived by and used the Connecticut River from the Native Americans to the conservationists.  They learned about the impact each group had on the river and why the river was important to them.  Students also learned about how pollution is removed from water.  They were given some water that we "polluted".  They then used various tools to try to clean up the pollution in their little part of the river.  They recorded results and shared with others.

Thank you to the CAUSE grant program for supporting new and interesting learning for our students.

Ready to GROW this summer!

That's right, the Macdonough garden is planted and ready to grow. The garden club members, made up of students from Kindergarten through 5th grade, worked very hard all spring prepping and planting the garden. Special thanks to the volunteers from Wesleyan's Middletown Urban Gardeners Club and to AETNA for their generous $500 donation and to the nurses from AETNA who helped us during our Plant Day.

Fourth Grade Visits the New England Air Museum

Students learned all about the four forces of flight: lift, drag, thrust, and gravity. They toured the museum and had an opportunity to create their own gliders. Students had fun testing out their gliders to see how far they could get them to fly. Special thanks to the N.E.A.M. for making this field trip possible.
